Trouble at the MRT Station

Trouble at the MRT Station
I was on my way to the MRT station to go to my friend’s house to do a group project. I was at the MRT station when I saw a man secretly slipping a banana into his mouth. He kept having sneaky glances.  He threw the banana skin on the ground......
An old man was walking past and he slipped on the banana skin that was thrown there. He fell with a great thud and his back was hurt badly. I could hear him groaning in excruciating pain. I felt indignant and furious as no one helped the old man up. I stepped forward and helped him up. The old man thanked me profusely and rushed away to get a cab to go to the hospital to get his back checked.
After that, I went up the escalator to take the MRT train. I was at the station platform when I saw the train come rumbling in. It came to a halt to let passengers board the train. While I was inside the train, I saw a boy grabbing on the pole and swinging his legs round and round. His legs hit many of the passengers standing near him. I did not think the parents were with him, so I went up to him and asked him to stop swinging round and round as he was endangering the other passengers.
Soon, I reached my destination and I alighted from the train and proceeded to my friend’s house. When I got home, I told my parents what I had done that day. They were so proud of me that they praised me for being so civic-minded and promised me that they would bring me out to the theme park the following week. I was so happy that I jumped for joy.

Tumult at a Beach

Breathing in the salty tang of the sea breeze, I take a slow walk along the beach, enjoying the wind as it ruffles my hair. My gaze wanders out to the sea, where families are cavorting in the water and giggling merrily. A girl abruptly stumbles and falls in the water with a huge splash, and my breath catches in my throat even as she surfaces shortly after, none the worse for wear. Memories of an unpleasant incident in the past come flooding rapidly back, and I shudder involuntarily.
The day began much like this day, with clear skies and a scorching sun. Leaping exuberantly out of the car, I tore down the pavement to the beach, not bothering to wait for the rest of the family to catch up. It had been so long since I last swam in the sea, and I was thrilled that my parents had finally agreed to a family outing at the beach once the school holidays started. Grinning from ear to ear, I took off my slippers and plunged my toes into the cool, wet sand.
“Zach, please watch out for Peter. Don’t stray too far!” my mother yelled.
My mother was a worrywart, and hardly a day would pass without her constant nagging. Waving a hand nonchalantly back, I ignored my younger brother’s pleas to wait for him and promptly waded into the water, relishing the feel of the warm waves around me.
Gamboling in the sea, I was having the time of my life, wondering how much better the day could get when a shrill shriek suddenly caught my ear. I stopped swimming, treading water on the spot.
What can be happening? Whipping my head around, I searched the waves for the source of the yell. My gaze fell on a commotion not far from me.
“Help!” a shout came again from that same direction. Someone was struggling in the water, flailing his limbs about in all directions. A head briefly rose above the water, spluttering and gasping before disappearing again under the waves.
Squinting my eyes against the glare of the sun, I made out that he was wearing a familiar dark blue suit with neon-yellow stripes, and sported the same white goggles my brother had. My jaw dropped and my heart somersaulted in my chest when a cold realisation hit me. My brother is in trouble!
Feeling as if my heart would seize up, I immediately started to swim over, kicking my legs as hard as I could. My blood roared in my ears from the effort and I could not shake the sense of foreboding that had settled over me.
Just as I was within reach of my brother, a burly swimmer appeared from the other side and encircled my sibling with his strong arms.
“Hold on, boy, you are going to be all right!” the man boomed as he hoisted half of my brother’s body out of the water. With powerful strokes, he swam back towards the shore, supporting my sibling’s head above the water while I trailed behind.
Upon reaching the shore, the man swiftly carried my brother up the beach, laying him on the ground a safe distance from the water. I dashed to my brother’s side, joining my parents who seeing what had transpired, had immediately sprinted over to us.
“Peter! Are you all right?” my mother asked anxiously as she crouched next to my brother. He grimaced and howled in pain, gesturing towards his legs. My mother shot me a reproachful look while my father stood over us, his brow creased and his face ashen. Why did I not keep a close eye on my brother? Guilt gnawed at me from the inside and I hung my head. Within moments, a lifeguard dressed in red and yellow had joined my parents and me.
“Please, give him some air. I believe he is suffering from leg cramps,” he advised. He then proceeded to help my brother with some leg-stretching exercises and gently massaged his thighs and calves, in a bid to relieve his muscle cramps.
Gradually, my brother stopped groaning and his face visibly relaxed. My parents heaved a huge sigh of relief. The lifeguard, seeing that my brother was now much better, advised my parents to let him take plenty of fluids and avoid strenuous exercise over the next few hours.
“He had probably swum too vigorously and was not properly hydrated before the swim. Please make sure he gets plenty of rest,” he cautioned. My parents and I thanked the lifeguard profusely, and quickly sought out the man who had saved my brother’s life to express our utmost gratitude.
I subsequently apologised to my mother for not heeding her instructions and for the rest of the day, I made special concessions for Peter, hoping the nice treatment would help to ease his traumatic experience.
Nevertheless, Peter refused to venture anywhere near a waterbody for the next month in fear that the same thing would happen to him. However, he gradually recovered his nerve and slowly picked up swimming again.
Turning my head back, I wait for my brother to catch up and take his hand before continuing our walk along the beach. Although six months have passed since the incident, I still feel regret whenever we come to the beach. Looking back, I realised my impatience could have cost my brother his life. Vigilance is important whenever there are possible dangers, and I never wish to put my family members at such risk again.

An Autobiography of a Street Dog by Adrian

An Autobiography of a Street Dog
On a winter night, I was born together with my three brothers, near a dustbin in a street corner. It was an uncelebrated birth of a dirty black puppy, so tiny and bony, and indeed extremely ugly to look at.

Four of us created funny noises, awaking men and women in the adjoining slums. We could hear them cursing us for disturbing them in their sleep. I was the smallest of all the four and the weakest, too. My stronger siblings drank my mother's milk more than I. According to Darwin's Theory of ' the survival of the fittest', I grew up, becoming smaller and weaker than my stronger siblings. Whenever some scraps of food were thrown by someone into the dustbin, I was the last fellow to have a meagre share of it.

My days passed in this miserable way. I felt that I was an unfortunate child. I left my dear ones, and went with a new friend to live in front of a hotel, where the left-over food was more than sufficient for both of us. Now then I realized the contentedness of having my stomach fed with nutritious and sumptuous food. Very soon, I grew more flesh and I no longer looked bony and ugly. I began to feel happier by the day. My friendship with my friend grew better each day. I was fond of following my good friend, everywhere he went. Whatever he did, I also followed. If he shook his tail in joy, I would do likewise.

All went well, until one morning, I saw a pet dog climbing onto the lap of a beautiful lady, who was caressing it. I was sure that the little white furry thing was looked after well and it looked well-fed. There would certainly not be a need for it to fight with other street dogs for its survival. How fortunate it was!  Ah, if I could be a pet to someone who really cared for me, perhaps I would not have to wander about for food in the alleys of any hotel, as I am till this day.

Pinched by a crab by Sandie

Pinched by a crab
Whenever I walked past a beach, I would remember an incident that happened a month ago.
It was a beautiful Monday morning with magnolia-white clouds floating lazily across the cerulean blue sky. Sam, Peter, Terry, Sandie and I, accompanied by Mr. Lee, our teacher, were going to East Coast Park to do our CIP. What is CIP, you may ask? It is the Community Involvement Programme..
The five of us were waiting excitedly for Mr. Lee to come and take our attendance while we discussed about our CIP trip at our school. About five minutes later, Mr. Lee interrupted our conversation as he wanted to take our attendance.
“Ok, I’m going to take your attendance now. Sam, Peter, Terry, Sandie and Yi Lin. If you are all here, let’s go!” Mr. Lee said.
“Yeah!” We all shouted in unison.
We boarded the bus and in about half an hour’s time, we reached our destination. When we saw the beach, we were disgusted at what lay ahead of us. A sandy beach was strewn with lots and lots of rubbish. How could people do that? We quickly took a plastic bag each and started picking up rubbish. Mr. Lee told us to be careful with sharp things and not to provoke any animals, like the crab, as they might pinch us. We nodded our heads in agreement and set off to do our CIP. As we were picking up litter, Sam saw a crab. He was curious about this small creature and went closer to take a look. Forgetting the advice Mr. Lee gave everyone, Sam decided to touch the crab. He used his finger to touch the crab and kept pushing it until the crab got irritated and pinched Sam’s finger, the moment it came near the crab.
All of a sudden, there was a loud ear-piercing scream coming out from Sam’s mouth, “Owww……!” Everyone jumped in fright. We turned and saw a crab pinching Sam. He stood rooted to the ground. His terrified gaze was fixated on the crab. His face turned pale as his tears slid down his cheeks. Mr. Lee came and looked at what had happened. When he saw Sam being bitten by a crab, he hurried anxiously towards Sam and tried to pry open the crab’s pincers but to no avail. While he was doing so, Peter was laughing heartily at Sam being pinched. Both of them were arch-enemies, so I guess that he was happy that his arch-enemy was bitten. When I saw blood dripping down from Sam’s finger, I screamed. I had a phobia of blood since young. Terry was startled by the whole thing that he stood there with his mouth wide open. As for Sandie, she was a a loss of what to say and do that she stood there giggling. Beads of perspiration formed on Mr. Lee’s forehead as he put in a final burst of strength.
After a few seconds, the crab relented and let go of the finger. It crawled back into the water. Mr. Lee told me to call the ambulance while he wrapped up the wound up. I frantically called the ambulance and told them what had happened. Within a few minutes, the ambulance came and carried Sam away into the ambulance before driving him to the hospital.
At the hospital, the doctor said that Sam suffered a minor injury and only had to apply antiseptic cream to the wound every day. Sam has learnt his lesson that a crab is not a toy to be played with. His encounter with the crab would be etched in his mind for some time as the pain he suffered was excruciating.
